About IHC

The objectives of Island Horse Council are: to promote, conduct and manage a Council for the benefit of Prince Edward Island equestrians; to provide a unifed voice for the horse industry on Prince Edward Island; to establish a liason with any authorities, including federal, provincial, and municipal governments, and provincial or national Horse Councils or Equestrian Federations; and to encourage the development of all aspects of horsemanship, health, education, training, competition, breeding, facilities and humane practices. Once a true federation, IHC once had only clubs as members.  Today the council has over 500 indivudual members.

Island Horse Council is a member of Sport PEI (the governing body for sport on PEI).  Island Horse Council is also a participant in the Sport P.E.I. annual awards program recognizing volunteer contribution and sport achievement. 

Island Horse Council is able to offer sport insurance to all its members. Any event sponsored by a member club may apply for sanction and, if sanctioned, participants in the event are covered by this insurance policy. 

Through PEI Provincial Government, Community & Cultural Affairs, Island Horse Council is able to access athletic / sport funding for its many activities each year including training and competitive events. 

Horse Council has representatives on the Provincial Council of Equine Canada, the national equestrian body.  IHC members are represented at the national level through these representatives.  Annual national meetings set policy which effects all riders in Canada. 

Island Horse Council actively supports and encourages the development and certification of coaches within the province through the Western and English Coaching Committees. 

The Island Horse Council Board of Directors consists of four elected officers, an English Coaching Coordinator, a Western Coaching Coordinator and two representatives from each of its nine member clubs.

IHC Equestrian Facilities

Strathgartney Equestrian Park - The newly renovated park, located in Bonshaw, PEI is the home of Horse Trials PEI and has been leased by the provincial government for over 25 years. The park features a cross-country jump course, two full size rings with stadium jumps, plenty of excellent parking, and a canteen and washroom. The park can be rented for an event at a cost of $100 by phoning Jackie Waddell of the Strathgartney Equestrian Park Committee (Donna Allen) at 675 2342.

Forest Hill Trail - The Forest Hill Horse Trail is located on provincially owned land in the Forest Hill Wildlife Management Area. The trail was developed to provide a safe place for Islanders and visitors to ride. The wildlife management area is used for other activities such as fishing, hiking, and hunting. The trailhead for the Forest Hill Horse Trail is on property adjacent to the wildlife management area and owned by Island Horse Council. It has parking space for trucks with trailers, and a corral. The trailhead is connected directly to the Forest Hill Horse Trail. There are approximately 6km of trail in the three loops that can be ridden in either direction. The majority of the trail is reclaimed wood roads that provide a solid surface most of the year. For more information, visit www.boughtonriver.com.
